Long Absence

So it's been a while since I've posted. I am way behind on my schedule to get the CCIE by September 20th. There's been some moderate progress in the meantime though.

I got my CCNP in January.

I'm attempting to break into the ISP world. To help with that venture, I'm going for the CCIP first, and then returning to the R/S written exam. I feel like forcing some BGP and MPLS knowledge into the noggin would be beneficial for my career in general.

And for the last bit of news... I'm going to an ARIN meeting. Free!

Well the plan is to get my digits by the time I'm 25.

My First Special IOS Build!

Hello,

This file has been posted for you as a test fix for the client display bug.
The file will remain for a short period of time. Even if you decide not to install the code immediately, you should plan on downloading it ASAP (and storing if necessary).

This is an automated email. Please do not reply directly to it. Cisco Systems has authorized one or more special files for you to get from Cisco Connection Online (CCO).

*** Please download these files immediately. ***
*** After 3 days they will be removed from CCO. ***

I feel pretty nifty.

Cisco Live - Live Blogging 2

I took the CCIE Written toady. I failed, as predicted.

I am ok with that though. I got 39/100. Passing is a 70. So yeah, I didn't do great, but I can get there. I won't be happy with anything less than a 90 on my next attempt.

Some notes on the exam...

Unlike on the CCNA you do have the ability to mark questions for review and go forward/back.

The exam really did stick to the blueprint.

My scoring breakdown:
General Network Theory - 44%
Bridging and LAN Switching - 38%
IP - 77%
IP Routing - 31%
QoS - 33%
WAN - 60%
IP Multicast - 12%
Security - 50%
MPLS - 33%
IPv6 - 33%

I can definitely make up point deficiencies on multicast, MPLS, and IPv6 as I haven't devoted any time to studying them. My score on L2 stuff was disappointing, I had put some effort into studing that material. It's not enough to be familiar with the material. You have to own this stuff and really be intimate with the inner working details.

The Internetwork Expert crew has been posting on changes to the CCIE tracks. Looks like R&S will be stable for a while longer. The unofficially announced CCIE Wireless track looks intriguing.

Cisco Live - Live Blogging

I flew into Orlando around 11PM Eastern, got my luggage by 11:30, and then waited until 12:15 to catch a shuttle. I was then the last stop on the shuttle run, so I didn't get checked in and settled until 1AM Eastern.

I'm in a class today called the 6500 Deep Dive or something like that. It started at 8AM Eastern (5? Pacific.. I can't even do math at the moment). I will definitely plan my flight a little differently the next time I have to go to the East Coast.

We're going over pretty cool stuff. Unfortunately I have been falling asleep when the material gets really dry, but that has only happened twice thus far.

Anyway, my original purpose for writing this post was to remind myself that I may have figured out why we have ACE hits that are supposed to log but don't. The ACE counter does increment, so I know a hit is occuring. I just learned that the ACE counter is actually implemented in hardware, and the syslog stuff gets punted to the RP. However, there are also rate limiters in place on ACL logs. So the solution may be to increase the rate limit or implement OAL.

"Pass the KY please"

One of my favorite moments in college was my Theory of Computation final. One of my fellow students actually brought a tube of KY to the exam. "For good luck," he said.

I am woefully under prepared for the CCIE written exam. I will, in all likelihood, fail. I was going to try to schedule an exam from the CCIP track and just focus on that for the next week, but as I reviewed my email I stumbled upon this little gem:

Moving forward, any changes to those requests need to be made through Pearson VUE at http://www.pearsonvue.com/cisco/contact/ or by phone at 877-404-3926. All changes must be requested by May 31, 2008

Whoops. I should try to be positive about this and look on the bright side. I will get exposure to the exam. That's actually a big part of Cisco exams. It's tough to anticipate the question formatting. At least the exam is free, so I'm not flushing $300 down the toilet.
